Neck Stretches from a Chiropractor in Highlands Ranch, Colorado

If you regularly suffer from a stiff neck, then the area above your shoulders is often where you hold tension. This stiffness may be caused by sitting at a desk all day long or by staring down at your phone for hours every day. Neck pain refers to any kind of discomfort in the neck, including the cervical spine, which runs from the base of the skull to the shoulders. We know what it's like to live in constant pain, so we asked our chiropractor in Highlands Ranch, Colorado to outline some neck pain stretches and everyday practices to help ease chronic pain.

Make sure you do these quick stretches several times throughout the day and you’ll experience far less neck pain on a daily basis.

What is Chronic Neck Pain?

You might not be able to avoid using the computer entirely, but there are ways to minimize its impact on your body. Stretching your neck every few hours or as often as you can will help loosen up any muscle tension.

Research shows that people who suffer from chronic shoulder, arm, or hand pains often experience these symptoms:

  • A kinking sensation

  • Stiffness

  • Severe discomfort

  • Feeling of tightness or pressure

  • Numb hands or fingers

  • Tingling or pins and needles sensations

  • Loss of strength or coordination in the arms

Consistently stretching your neck muscles is one of the best ways to prevent neck pain and these symptoms, and this stretching can be done from anywhere like your home or even at the office. As a top chiropractor in Highlands Ranch, Colorado, we will happily share spine stretches with you during your consultation. However, these 5 stretches offer an effective way to relieve persistent pain in your neck.

1. Assisted Neck Pull

Put your hands on the back of your head with your elbows pointing outward. Stand up tall and take a deep breath, and then exhale as you drop your chin towards your chest, pulling your elbows down towards the floor. Use the weight of your arms to continue the stretch as you hold it for a few breaths. Afterwards, perform the same stretch by angling your head 45-degrees to the right and then to the left.

2. Forward Fold Engaging Head Movement

Bend forward at your hips and bend towards the ground. Hold onto your opposite elbows and allow your head to dangle down in between your arms. Nod your head yes and no for several breath cycles.

3. Ear Drop

Interlace your fingers behind your back, resting your hands on the small of your lower back and pulling the shoulders down and back. Drop your right ear down to your right shoulder, breathe deeply, and hold for a couple of seconds. Then switch sides.

4. Neck Circles

From a standing or seated position, start by drawing a circle with your chin to the right three times and then to the left three times. Be careful to maintain minimal movement here.

5. Yes Stretch

Nod your head yes in an exaggerated nod and lift your head up looking as high to the sky as you can. Then you will drop your chin to your chest and relax in the position. Repeat 10 times minimum.
